Dutch painter Johannes Vermeer created The Milkmaid, also known as De Melkmeid or Het Melkmeisje or the kitchen maid , an oil-on-canvas depiction of a domestic kitchen maid who appears to be a "milkmaid." A milkmaid, a woman who milks cows and produces dairy goods like butter and cheese, is depicted in the artwork gently pouring milk into a short earthenware container on a table in a basic room. Before large households hired them to perform housework, milkmaids started working only in the stables instead of contracting out more work.
