The Dutch artist Vincent van Gogh's two series of still life paintings, are titled Sunflowers (original title, in French: Tournesols). The flowers are shown laying on the ground in the first series, created in Paris in 1887, while a bouquet of sunflowers in a vase is shown in the second series, which was built in Arles the following year. The name of the artist's friend Paul Gauguin, who bought two of the Paris copies, the two sets were connected in the artist's thinking. In the guest room of his home in Arles, where Gauguin was planning to stay, Van Gogh created the painted Décoration for the Yellow House, which he hoped would welcome and dazzle Gauguin again about eight months later.
