It was not unusual for Van Gogh to paint the garden at Arles twice in the same month of 1888, as he did with this piece. Before switching to a new topic, he frequently produced multiple works of the same motif quickly and within the same time frame, albeit he always returned to it afterwards. The Impressionists placed a great deal of value on this method of painting because they wanted to depict how the light changed as the motif was painted. It is intriguing since it offers several perspectives and demonstrates how the artist develops a concept. It kind of gave a glimpse into the creative process that motivated him.
